The question may sound silly to people who have not experienced a panic attack or have never witnessed the condition of someone suffering from panic disorders. But to a victim of panic disorders or those who are close to the individual, death seems to be an imminent reality.

Why Panic Attack Sufferers Feel They’re Going to Die

The symptoms of a panic attack so closely resemble a heart attack that more often than not, the patient as well as his or her close family members fears that that the end is near.

Moreover, some of the symptoms of a panic disorder lead the victim to think of death, as the symptoms are so fearful and scary that the patient starts to believe that death is imminent. At times the repeated thought of death can also induce panic attacks.

Be that as it may, it might be redeeming to know that you can not die from having a panic disorder, however grim and violent the panic attack may be. The feeling of death during a panic attack seems real enough but this is mainly due to the fact that the nervous system of the body is on high alert, and most of the responses that you feel or witness are mere attempts for survival against a perceived threat.

Panic Attack Symptoms That Resemble an Imminent Death

Rapid palpitation, chest pain, sweating are some of the signs of a panic attack and they resemble a heart attack. But rest assured that these may be perceived as ‘seizures’ preceding death, but they are actually not. This means that while panic attacks cannot kill you, you also cannot stop breathing, will not faint or go crazy, though it feels like that most of the time.

The feeling that death is imminent appears to most people who are either having a panic attack for the first time or have no prior knowledge of the symptoms or the condition. The terrifying symptoms including breathlessness, dizziness, trembling and the fear that something horrible is going to happen – can be truly unnerving. The worst part of all this is that the symptoms seem to appear out of the blue without any prior indication.

What every panic disorder patient needs to remember is that these near-death sensations are but a passing phase and will soon subside with time. While panic disorder can manifest itself through a wide range of symptoms, there is a logical and biological explanation for all the symptoms that appear. The truth of the matter is that the symptoms, however severe they are, never kill the victim.

One of the important aspects of suffering from panic disorders is that though it will not kill you, it can do some serous damage to the overall quality of life for you as well as others who care for you in the family. Apart from the pain and humiliation that a panic disorder can bring, the loss in earning in case of partial or complete disability can be substantial. Panic disorders also make the victim more prone to suicide and drug or alcohol abuse.
