We all agree that modern-day existence is stressful and filled with uncertainties and tension. While some can take these things in stride, others of us aren’t as lucky.

We panic at the thought of crossing the road and may dread the idea of going to a shopping mall. We excessively worry about money or security of a family member.

When such thoughts and worries are intense and repetitive, they can throw the life of the victim completely out of gear. The individual produces an excessive amount of adrenaline and other chemicals in response to such ‘perceived’ threats. He or she is then diagnosed to be suffering from a condition called chronic anxiety disorder.

According to statistics provided by the National Institute of Mental Health, 19 million adults in the US suffer from one form of anxiety or another. Sleep disorders, depression, tension, muscle aches, and fatigue can all accompany chronic anxiety, which if ignored, can eventually result in chronic anxiety disorder.

Typical Symptoms of Chronic Anxiety Disorder

What is so important about chronic anxiety disorder and why is it critical that we understand its symptoms?

The primary reason for this is because the sooner we identify the symptoms, the quicker we can diagnose the condition and get relevant treatment. The trouble with chronic anxiety disorder is that not many can identify its onset early on.

When the victim cannot bear it anymore, he or she seeks medical intervention, by which time it could be too late for quick remedial action. Here are some of the most identifiable symptoms of chronic anxiety disorder:

  • A nagging fear that something might go wrong any time. This could be a constant fear related to work, school or the family.
  • The symptoms may appear all of a sudden and gradually manifest over time. Many times such symptoms start to appear after a traumatic event. Frequent flashbacks or repeated nightmares are often the early symptoms of chronic anxiety disorder.
  • Some of the physical symptoms of chronic anxiety disorder include dizziness, excessive sweating, and rapid palpitation.
  • Insomnia is a common condition accompanying chronic anxiety disorder. This is often accompanied by several stress-related disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, headaches and tiredness.

It is not uncommon to find sufferers of chronic anxiety disorder avoiding situations which they fear might trigger the condition. This includes avoiding a particular route to go to work, or even sensing insecurity in certain sections of the home.

It has been proven that women tend to suffer more from symptoms of chronic anxiety disorder than men. It is also true that no two individuals will suffer the symptoms in the same way. In short, whether you suffer from frequent panic attacks or live with the constant fear of something bad happening, there is no denying that the condition can be referred to as chronic anxiety disorder.

When do you know that you are suffering from chronic anxiety disorder? Chronic anxiety (sometimes referred to as Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD) could manifest itself in the form of constant worries, fears, and negative thoughts, resulting in headaches, nausea and other physical problems. When such condition persists for a minimum of 6 months, chances are that you would be diagnosed with chronic anxiety disorder.

Other common symptoms of this condition include:

  • Irregular beating and repeated pounding of the heart
  • Shuddering or quivering
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Choking feeling
  • Chest spasms
  • Upset stomach
  • Excessive concern about death or paralysis.
  • Sensation of extreme heat or cold.
