It is not uncommon to hear that an individual suffering from anxiety disorders is also a victim of depression. Depression and anxiety disorder – they seem to be partners in crime, always hand in hand.

You may have wondered why the two individual mental disorders are seen together so often. The answer is that a similar kind of biological vulnerability is considered to be at the root of both these ailments.

Interestingly, when a person is suffering from depression, it is likely to worsen the individual’s anxiety disorders and vice versa. Therefore when it concerns treatment, doctors prefer to treat both depression and anxiety disorder simultaneously.

How Depression and Anxiety Disorder are Linked

If you study the outward manifestations of depression and anxiety disorder, it is rather interesting. Though at first glance they look alike, they are really not same. When a person is depressed, he or she is also filled with feelings of hopelessness, despair and anger. The individual feels low in energy and finds managing day-to-day existence nearly impossible. They also find it hard to manage their relationships, career, or life at home.

A person suffering from anxiety disorders on the other hand, panics at the slightest provocation, and goes through intermittent phases of overwhelming anxiety. Situations which do not upset a normal healthy human being can be completely frightening for the sufferer of anxiety disorder.

The victim experiences sudden bouts of anxiety attacks, without any recognizable trigger. Unless treated, both depression and anxiety disorder can completely ruin an individual’s life.

Interestingly, both depression and anxiety disorder are treated with the same group of medicines. This could explain why many of us feel confused about these two conditions. While anti-depressants are used to treat anxiety disorders, behavioral therapy or cognitive behavioral therapy is used for treating both depression and anxiety disorder.

Nobody yet knows why but depression is more often than not accompanied by anxiety disorder. In a recent study, it was observed that nearly 85% of depressed patients were also diagnosed to be suffering from GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), while 35% of the depressed also suffered from panic disorder.

The usual fear before an examination is not the kind of fear that is experienced by someone suffering from anxiety disorders. It is a constant and nagging fear that allegedly arises out of a malfunctioning of the chemistry inside the brain. The sufferer is permanently stalked by fear and the feeling of danger lurking around the corner never seems to fade away.

The Double-Edged Sword of Depression and Anxiety

Coping with depression and anxiety disorder is a doubly-challenging prospect for many sufferers. When anxiety is present along with depression the symptoms of both the conditions multiply and become more intense, compared to a situation when these disorders are present independently.

Additionally, symptoms of depression take longer time to heal, making the total condition of depression and anxiety disorder more chronic and more resistant to any form of treatment.

The worst part is that the manifestation of depression and anxiety disorder appearing together could have fatal outcome – the patient becomes highly suicidal than if he or she was suffering from depression alone. It has been found in a clinical study that 92% of depressed people who had attempted suicide were also suffering from severe anxiety disorder.

Somewhat like the lethal combination of alcohol and barbiturates, the combination of depression and anxiety disorder could be fatal. It is sad news that nearly 60% of depressed patients also suffer from varying levels of anxiety disorders.
