When faced with a fearful situation, we often say to ourselves: don’t panic, its going to be alright! We often use the word panic in our day to day conversations, but do we really know the true panic definition? This is particularly important if we want to find links of panic definition to panic attacks, a serious kind of mental disorder that affects millions of Americans every year.

Most of us have a rough idea of the meaning of the word ‘panic’, but in the truest sense of the word, panic definition is a sudden and overwhelming fear that grips and replaces thinking. It typically occurs during fearful situations like robbery, physical assault, etc which endangers the health and safety of the affected person.  The word has its origin from the Greek god named Pan. Since the ancient Greeks gave the credit of winning the Marathon to their goat-god Pan, they used his name to describe the frenzy and fear displayed by the enemy soldiers while they were fleeing.

In modern parlance, panic definition also encompasses an acute fear marked by anxiety. Prehistoric men used panic tactics to hunt large groups of animals, as they reacted to unusual sights and sounds and ran. They were directed towards high cliffs from where they jumped to their deaths.

Similarly, humans may also react to fearful situations and panic. It is said that panic is infectious and it is not uncommon to find large groups of men and women reacting irrationally when stimulated by a sense of fear. This could explain the rationale behind stampede.

But how can one relate panic definition to panic attacks? Panic attacks, considered to be symptoms of a particular type of anxiety disorder, affect nearly 60 million adult Americans at some point in their lives. Another very distinctive feature about panic definition in the light of panic attacks is that the symptoms are very different from other types of anxiety. They appear suddenly, unprovoked and are often disabling.

If you have noticed, the term ‘irrational fear’ is part of the panic definition. This also means that if someone has had a panic attack once, he or she may subsequently develop irrational fears or phobias about a set of situations and begin to avoid them. For example, if the scene of the panic attack is within an elevator, the victim may try to perpetually avoid elevators, for fear of having another attack.

This constant fear of having another attack and repeated avoidance eventually turns into a situation where the patient is diagnosed with panic disorder, a condition which may result in the patient being unable to drive or leave the house. The panic definition now takes another turn.  At this stage, the patient is diagnosed with a panic disorder called agoraphobia. Therefore panic disorder can be of two types: with or without agoraphobia.

According to the panic definition, a person may panic suddenly without any trigger. But there are some symptoms that precede a panic attack. These include: pain in the chest, upset stomach, dizziness or lightheadedness, difficulty in breathing, tingling sensation in the hands, hot flashes or chills, an overwhelming feeling that something horrible is going to happen and one is powerless to prevent it and so on.

The duration of a panic attack may vary. But typically, it lasts more than 10 minutes when the victim is completely under the grip of panic. This situation is very similar to what happens during a heart attack. There are a number of emotional disorders which can have panic attacks as symptoms. These include post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and withdrawal from certain intoxicant drugs.

The panic definition gives us an indication of where ‘irrational fear’ may lead to. So, next time you ask someone not to panic, you know what you are talking about!
