Before diving into panic treatments, it makes more sense to know what panic attacks are, the symptoms, and the different types of attacks.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, panic attack is described as ‘a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort that is accompanied by at least four of thirteen physical or cognitive symptoms’ (APA 1994). The experience of less than four symptoms is known as a ‘limited symptom attack’ (APA 1994).

Some of the symptoms of panic attack are: palpitations, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath or smothering, feelings of choking, chest pain or discomfort, nausea or abdominal distress, dizziness or lightheadedness, and so on.

There are 3 types of panic attacks: Spontaneous (without any situational trigger); Situational (triggered by a situation which had earlier caused an attack) and Situational Pre-disposed (though pre-disposed to a specific situation, the victim may or may not have another attack).

So, how do you get started, and who should you visit, for panic treatments? Well, that largely depends on the severity of the condition. When the situation is turning serious (like suicidal), it is best to visit a psychiatrist.

One of the most preferred first lines of therapy for panic treatments is cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT. While this line of therapy is offered by a psychologist, you may need to see your GP for getting a referral. You may also get panic treatments through the public health system at a community health center or public hospital.

If the condition is not that severe and you feel that you can still cope with it, there is an alternative to professional panic treatments – and that is learning some cognitive skills with the help of books and DVDs, attending anxiety management programs or by joining any anxiety management support group.

Panic treatments can not offer fast remedies. The therapist and the patient have to work together through the causes of panic attacks to find the most appropriate remedy. Panic treatments are more about unfolding an understanding of the disease condition.

One of the most prevalent trends in this field is that patients usually show up when the condition has worsened to the extent that it has started to disrupt normal living. This is also the reason why panic treatments take so long. It is also common for patients who don’t feel comfortable with their counselor to seek another medial opinion, visiting another clinic and so on. So if you are looking for fast panic treatments, you might be disappointed.

Other than CBT, psychiatrists are also recommending hypnotherapy as part of panic treatments. This therapy module is found to be attractive to many patients as it does not require any active role on the part of the patient and it is also effective. If you are already knowledgeable about hypnotherapy, and the condition is not seriously impairing, you could also try self-hypnotism.

If you are looking for prescription medicines for panic treatments, essentially antidepressants and anti-anxiety drugs are recommended by doctors. Many of these medications have or may not have sedative or tranquilizing effects. Many of them are habit forming and are not without its fair share of side effects. Such drug options are normally not recommended for long term use mainly for their adverse side effects.

There are plenty of natural therapy options as panic treatments including herbal treatments, naturopathy and deep breathing exercises like yoga, etc. However for a serious health condition like panic disorder which is at the root of panic attacks, it is always advisable not to try self-medication and seek the guidance of a qualified medical practitioner.
