It is estimated that close to 6 million Americans experience panic attacks. Did you know that half of this population experiences a condition called sleep panic attacks, also known as nocturnal panic attacks? This may come as a surprise to you, since most of us believe that panic triggers are usually present only during daytime.

What causes sleep panic attacks? Are they any different from the ‘regular’ panic attacks that we know about? Can sleep panic attacks be treated? If you are a victim of such a disorder or have some one in the family who is, then such questions could be cropping up.

Sleep Panic Attacks: What Causes Them?

Here is some basic information about sleep panic attacks aimed to make you more enlightened on the topic:

  • Many victims of panic disorder believe that sleeping at night is the ultimate in loss of control. This helpless and defenseless state triggers sleep panic attacks.
  • Fear of death while asleep is another common trigger. Though irrational, these victims fear a heart attack while they are asleep.
  • Sleep panic attacks usually happen during the early phases of sleep and not during REM sleep, which is a deeper state. Many of these night time attacks are a result of nightmares too, occurring during the second half of the common sleep period.
  • One of the biggest differences between sleep panic attacks and regular panic attacks is that day time attacks give some kind of signal of its arrival. This enables the victim to take some steps to prevent it or lessen the impact. However, sleep panic attacks appear without any hint whatsoever.
  • These nocturnal attacks are common for people who do not get regular sleep like shift workers, elderly people, etc.
  • Sleep apnea has indirect links with sleep panic attacks, since sleep apnea affects heart rate and blood pressure.
  • According to one school of thought, these attacks are caused by an excessive build up of carbon dioxide in the body leading to a condition called ‘false suffocation alarm’ that cause the body to respond by heavy breathing and increased heart beats.
  • Sleep panic attacks have a direct link to daytime activities including use of alcohol, drugs, depression and excessive stress.
  • The causes and symptoms of sleep panic attacks are very similar to regular panic attacks. Here the victim also wakes up with a racing heart, hot or cold flashes and feeling disoriented. But these attacks differ from regular panic attacks by way of suddenness of striking. The victim may never know whether he or she will have an attack in the night or not.
  • Heredity, stress, chemical imbalances, sleep apnea are some of the identified causes of this condition.

How You Can Treat Sleep Panic Attacks

The good news is that this condition can be prevented and stopped. Apart from the host of drugs that are available to reduce the chances of a nocturnal panic attack, psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy has proved to be one of the most effective treatment options for this condition.

Learning the art of relaxation, practicing meditation, deep breathing or simply doing what you love to do can all work wonders to relieve you from sleep panic attacks.

Doctors also recommend regular physical exercises, healthier diet and improved lifestyle choices to reduce the chances of its occurrence.

A night time sedative sometimes works well as a short term measure. However one of the main concerns with this type of medication is that they might interfere with normal sleep patterns. Even then, this is a better option than to live through the night that may include sleep panic attacks.
