Most of us have concerns about the foods we eat on two occasions: when we have a upset stomach (we hunt for the culprit which caused the problem), and when we are allergic to certain types of foods (we try and avoid them). But did you know that there are certain types of foods and drinks which can even trigger a panic attack?

It this comes to you as a shock, then read on as there could be more surprises waiting for you.

Who Is Most Likely to Suffer Panic Attacks from Food?

There are two types of people who can come under a possible panic attack caused by foods and drinks. The first are those who have had a panic attack earlier. Such people are more prone to a relapse of a similar situation.

The second type of people are those who may not have had a panic attack earlier but are nervous in their general disposition. They are always under some kind of stress – be it their jobs, relationships, health issues, etc.

It is important to remember that a panic attack is the final outcome of an extremely stressful situation. Therefore, you need to be cautious about some types of foods and drinks that contribute towards this stress or nervousness.

Food That Can Trigger Panic Attacks

This means that foods that negatively impact the neurotransmitters in the body are the ones that can promote a panic attack. One of the most common drinks that fall in this category is tea or coffee.

Stimulants like caffeine contain a substance called ephedrine that adds to the ‘energy’ value of the substance. Ephedrine, incidentally, is found in a host of stimulant drugs and over the counter medicines. Many different brands of aerated drinks also contain substantial amounts of caffeine and other stimulants which are harmful for people who are prone to panic attacks.

In case you are fond of candy, starchy or processed foods or foods that contain excess amounts of sugar, you need to be very careful – as these could contribute positively to panic attacks.

To summarize, here are the three basic foods or drinks that you need to avoid, if you want to avoid panic attacks:

  • Many people drink alcohol to forget their sorrows, and this can also be the sorrow of having panic disorder. But alcohol raises hyperactivity of the nervous system, which in turn causes mental agitation and irritability. Even if you consume alcohol, make sure you limit its consumption gradually. Some people suffer withdrawal symptoms if they abruptly stop a long-time habit.
  • Caffeine also raises your heart rate, like alcohol. If you are an avid coffee drinker, opt for decaffeinated variety. Gradually reduce the frequency and strength of the caffeinated drink including, cola, tea or chocolate.
  • The third substance to avoid is sugar. We all know that sugary drinks or foods hardly contain nutrients but are rich in calories. Sugar causes hyperactivity because of the increased energy levels, which in turn cause emotional imbalance that may lead to panic attacks.

So there you have it – there are some common every day foods and drinks which have the capability to contribute significantly to your panic disorder and may even promote the next attack. Therefore, having a balanced diet could hold the key to preventing panic attacks and reclaiming your life once again.
